The Dutch Reformed church convened an international synod to address a growing rift inside its own theological house.

Controversy

The Arminian Remonstrance challenged unconditional election and irresistible grace, proposing a more conditional, synergistic account of salvation.

Confession / Clarification

Dort articulated what later became known as the five points: total depravity, unconditional election, particular redemption, irresistible grace, perseverance of the saints.

Sharpens the covenant of grace as unilateral and gracious, feeding directly into the fuller federal architecture Westminster builds a generation later.
